In Query: Lightning Under My Skin

Written in 2021

Querying since 2022

Eve Allard is an introverted antiquities appraiser and witch in New York with a specific power. When she touches an object, she can see its past floating into her vision like snow. But when a photography show flyer showcasing an antique clock sends invisible sparks into her fingers, she develops a taste for a warmer mystery.

Eve’s search leads her to the photographer/artist Julia Dehner, a divorcee rebuilding a new version of herself, her past relationships haunting every step. Julia unexpectedly rescues Eve from an undesirable sexual advance, and Eve discovers Julia’s caress far exceeds the mild flicker from the flyer. Love, much less lust, never affects Eve, but Julia breaks down Eve’s emotional walls with her earnest affection. But the unusual fire intensifies alongside their passion, literally burning Eve’s skin.

Eve suspects Julia is hiding something but is patient. Julia tiptoes around questions in a precarious game of feigned ignorance about magical forces. Her dead ex-girlfriend’s ghost appears in dreams and remembrances, freezing Julia’s words like a curse. Despite her past, Julia trusts Eve but dreads why her ex-girlfriend lingers when Julia only wants to think of her future. Eve fears nothing but opening her heart to someone she can’t save. The sinister undercurrent of the magical fire that drew them together threatens their love. They can only defeat it by embracing a deeper trust they both fear.
